How to choose LED high-shed lights in warehouses and factories: Push the configuration backwards from the installation height

Most high-shed lamp projects go wrong before placing an order for the lights-because purchasing decisions are based on wattage, not installation height. The height determines the beam angle, the beam angle determines the spacing between the lights, and the spacing determines how many lights the building needs.

The rule of thumb is: 60° light distribution is suitable for installation heights of 6 - 9 meters, 90° covers 9 - 12 meters, and 120° is reserved for low-roof or abnormally wide channels below 6 meters. The illuminated diameter of the ground is approximately equal to "installation height × 2 × tan(half beam angle)". This also explains why the narrow beam on the high top can shoot out the same coverage area from the wide beam on the low top, while workers below experience much less glare.

Next, please start from the illumination target rather than the number of lumens printed on the packaging. EN 12464-1 places the general warehouse storage area at approximately 100 lux, the picking and packaging area at 150 - 300 lux, and higher for precision assembly. Divide the target illumination by the maintenance factor-dust, light decay and lens contamination usually eat up to 20 - 30% of the initial light flux-and is the maintenance lumen you really have to buy.

Finally, check the IP and IK protection levels required for the environment in which the lamp will be exposed for a long time, and confirm that the drive power supply has a verifiable surge level. In workshops without heating, dimming and human sensing usually bring more energy saving than replacing slightly more efficient lamps.
