How exactly are IP and IK levels measured-and how to verify supplier claims

Each outdoor lighting parameter table is printed with an IP rating, and many are also printed with an IK rating, but few buyers have seen what these tests do. Only by understanding the test parameters can we turn an IP claim from a marketing statement into a question that can be cross-examined.

According to IEC 60529, there are quantitative conditions for waterproof testing. The IPX5 uses a 6.3-mm nozzle to spray the housing at a distance of 2.5 - 3 meters at a rate of 12.5 liters of water per minute. The IPX6 uses a 12.5 mm nozzle with 100 liters of water per minute. IPX7 immerses the housing into 1 meter water depth for 30 minutes. IPX9K used in the food and rinsing industry is sprayed from four angles with high temperature water of 80 °C and a pressure of 80 - 100 bar. After the test, open the shell to check whether there is water in the places where water should not be flooded-the judgment is based on the visual inspection results, not just "whether the light is still on."

The logic of collision avoidance testing is different. IEC 62262 specifies the use of a pendulum of specified mass and radius to drop from a specified height. IK08 has a 5 joule impact and IK10 has a 20 joule impact. The shell is knocked at its weakest point, usually five times, and is passed as long as it remains safe and functions normally.

The question of verification is straightforward: request the test report, not the logo. A credible report will specify the testing laboratory, basis standards, specific test conditions and sample identification, and correspond to the specific model you are purchasing. If the supplier can only provide a self-declaration, treat this level as a design intention and personally inspect the sealing structure-the sealing ring material, the cable inlet and lens bonding method.
